Chuck Close used friends and family, and even himself, as inspiration for his works. First creating a gridded photograph of his subject, Close created his compositions by similarly gridding the canvas and working square by square. The finished works reveal subtleties and variations in the process. Partially paralyzed in 1998, Close worked by strapping a brush to his hand and forearm.
