Chuck Close uses friends and family, and even himself, as inspiration for his works. First creating a gridded photograph of his subject, Close creates his compositions by similarly gridding the canvas and working square by square. The finished works reveal subtleties and variations in the process, which Close continues to refine. Partially paralyzed in 1998, Close now works by strapping a brush to his hand and forearm.
