The Eugene Savage Collection
The Eugene Savage Collection, purchased in 2007, contains 113 paintings, watercolors, charcoals, and sketches (1934 – 1952) by Eugene Savage, an American muralist, member of the National Academy, and Professor of painting at Yale University. In early 1935, Savage embarked on a journey deep into the Florida Everglades in search of the Seminoles. His paintings, drawings, and watercolors not only document Seminole traditions that were threatened by modern development of the Everglades, but are also important works of art in their own right, reminiscent of Surrealist dreamscapes and Art Deco sensibilities. In 2011, the Museum purchased a selection of archival materials to support the collection.
