Join Cummer Amelia and Dr. Debra Murphy at Story and Song on Amelia Island for a three part lecture series. This lecture will explore the transition from the lighthearted Rococo represented by such artists as Boucher and Fragonard to the high-minded seriousness of the Neoclassical style seen in the canvases of Jacques Louis David. Works from the Cummer Museum such as pieces from the Meissen collection and paintings by Charles-Joseph Natoire and René-Théodore Berthon will be considered in the context of this time period.

Join Cummer Amelia and Dr. Debra Murphy at Story and Song on Amelia Island for a three part lecture series. The great flowering of Impressionism, originally considered radical and revolutionary, will be examined in the paintings of Monet, Renoir and Degas. The museum’s Return from the Harvest and Young Love by William-Adolphe Bouguereau, seen as the “quintessential salon painter of his generation,” will serve as backdrops to the “New Painting.”

Dr. Debra Murphy is the inaugural chair of the Department of Art and Design at the University of North Florida. She has been recognized for outstanding teaching by UNF, the Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville, and the Southeastern College Art Conference. She has also been recognized by the University for  her founding of the department’s Italy program, which has just celebrated its 10th year. Dr. Murphy has long been a member of the Cummer Museum and has written a book on its early director, Joseph Jeffers Dodge. Dr. Murphy has also written on the Cummer Museum’s Holy Family attributed to Giorgio Vasari.
